Darkness

Darkness in dreams represents the unknown, the unconscious mind, and fear of what you cannot see. Complete darkness suggests being 'in the dark' about something important. Fear of the dark reflects fear of the unconscious and its contents. However, darkness can also be a womb-like, protective state — a necessary emptiness before new creation. The response to darkness (fear vs. acceptance) is diagnostically important.

River

Rivers represent the flow of life, time, and emotional energy. A calm river suggests going with the flow and accepting life's current direction. Turbulent rapids indicate emotional turbulence or challenging transitions. Crossing a river symbolizes making an important transition. The direction of the river, its clarity, and its speed all add meaning. In many traditions, rivers separate the world of the living from the dead.
